Like almost everybody, I feel a little bit on vacations even in Paris and wish I could take other days off before leaving for the countryside in August. So I try to clear my affairs and take times to contact designers in order to give you new shoe's stories in September. Recently I found old French movies magazines (I love those) and especially this one with Ludmilla Tchérina on the cover (August 1950).
Very "New Look" Ludmilla. At the beginning of the decade and until the end of the sixties, the high heel pump and sandal predominate in the shoe industry. The French women who can't bear anymore the platform shoes worn during the war, want eagerly high heel pumps, and the last models with small platforms disappear in 1954. The first years after the end of the war in Europe are pretty hard and difficult and the majority of women can't satisfy their desires for elegant shoes and outfits but the Christian Dior "New Look" collection in 1947 was the revival of the parisian fashion, especially for wealthy American customers. Women want black pumps, the new chic, that they can wear either in the day time or for dinner parties and theatre evenings.
I find these French pumps made with silk velvet and golden kid quite representative of the 50's pump's shape, except for the fetishistic vertiginous high heels. And I guess that Alfred Hitchcock who was so obsessed about black pumps would have fancied them. Don't you remember that all his blond heroines often wear those kind of shoes? And I've never forgotten Eva Marie Saint losing hers on the Mount Rushmore.
